Lighting and Colour

 https://sites.google.com/hornby.school.nz/rc-learning-site-2020/courses/film-study

Sexxxy Paragraph

In the film The Hunger Games by Gary Ross lighting is used effectively to show the difference between District 12 and the Capitol. In District 12 we see mainly brown, green and grey, therese are natural colours. In the Capitol we see artificial, vibrant colours. This makes us understand that the Capitol has the privilege of technological lighting. The director did this to show the theme Rich vs Poor. The power of the Capitol over District 12 is shown through the use of futuristic technology. The lack of opportunity in District 12 is highlighted by their poverty or their lack of modern technology. Lighting in each location can be compared to the possibility of Hope and Rebellion in each setting.

Picture 1- Reaping Scene District 12

What is happening?- The people of district 12 are waiting to find out who will be reaped.

Describe- faded from repeated washing, mended, old, worn, dark colours so the coal doesn't damage

the light colour, at reaping they are in their best clothes, they are in their best clothes because they are

being watched by the Capitol and other districts, don’t want to look as poor as they are. Boys outfits-

button up collar shirts, suspenders, trousers/shorts. Girls- dresses or skirts, length at knees but not

longer. Hair is tidy. NO accessories- can’t afford, not practical.

Effect on the viewer- they are poor, not enough money for more than the basics. They want to be seen

as equals, respectable not as dirty coal miners.

Directors Purpose- to show the difference between the Capitol and the other districts, Capitol has

wealth- privilege- their clothing is nicer, the more available and can get clothes that fit them properly.

Techniques- camera angle- wide shot which shows lots of people crammed in, high angle shot which

makes the subjects seem weak and vulnerable- emphasises the power of the Capitol over the Districts

Picture 2- Arrival in the Capitol

What is happening? The capitol residents are waiting for the tributes to arrive.

Describe- colourful, bright, amiculate, exotic, co-ordinated, variety, Women- dresses, different styles but

on same bright colour palette, Men- suits, skirts, Accessories- dyed dogs, headwear/hats, handbags,

gloves, earrings, make-up, accessories aren't limited to one gender e.g men have long eyelashes.

Effect on the viewer- that they are wealthy- not poor, they have privilege- born into wealth and don’t

have to worry about reaping/working.

Directors Purpose- to highlight the luxuriousness of the capitol.

Techniques- setting- light, modern architecture, stones, metals, steel, fresh, new, futuristic.

Sexxxy Paragraph

In the reaping scene, costumes are used effectively to show ‘rich vs poor’ . In this ase ‘rich vs poor’

means the privileges afforded to people in Panem based on their district. This is demonstrated by the

clothing worn by the residents of District 12 during the annual reaping. The clothes are uniform like, well

worn and bland colors. The boys wear button up collar shirts and shorts or trousers whilst the girls wear

skirts or dresses. These are examples of their best clothing which tells us that they are poor and are

limited to what they can access. This makes the audience think that although they are poor and can

only afford the basics they want to be seen as respectable by the Capitol and other districts not just as

coal miners. This was done to show the difference between the Capitol and the other districts- the

Capitol has wealth and privilege whilst the people in the district have to make do. This worked well with

the use of camera angles. In this shot a high angle wide shot is used to show us that the people of

District 12 are weaker and more vulnerable under the power of those in the Capitol. This can be

juxtaposed to the use of costumes in the Capitol where we see ‘rich vs poor’ through the extravagance

and luxuriousness of the citizens' costumes.

Workshop 1: Themes And Ideas

Workshop1: Unpacking themes and ideas

  • Rich vs Poor
  • Hope and Rebellion
  • Struggle for power
  • Power of Propaganda
Rich vs Poor
Poverty, Power, Privilege

Rich- Lots of money, More opportunities, privilege, power
Poor- Less opportunities, no power, less money, disadvantaged

Definition: Theme of 'Rich vs Poor'
It is more than just money, it is about who has more power, privilege and opportunities.

Rich:
- President Snow, District 1, Caesar, Capitol.
- Capitol- dont get reaped for the hunger games, Food- variety, plenty, excessive.
-Clothing- ccleaner, brighter, new outfit everyday, privilege of choice to co-ordinate what they wear they have choice.
-Buildings- bigger, different materials, not worn down, architecture is moderen, example of power and privilege.
-Technology- more advanced, they have airships, trains, they put ina tracking technology. Medical technology- blood scanners, healing balms.
-Children- get presents, get to play, have to work, don't worry.

Poor:
- District 12, District 11
- District 12
- Buildings, broken, not secure, holes in roofs, made from wood, small, don't have access to materials to make anything to better, dont have alot of electricity.
-Clothing, bland, not a lot of variety, old style, Boys best outfits- broken shirts, button up, trousers/shorts/suspenders, shows us that their clothes don't always fit properly, hand me downs, Girls best outfits- dresses, shirts/skirts, not good fit. Coal miners- black, grey, dark colours don't show as much dirt.
- Technology,  medicines- we dot n see any, we do see sick people, shows privilege of being healthy
- Transport, walking, electric fence doesn't work- not enough power.
- Food, not enough scarce, hunting for it, rations, put your name into the reaping for extra food.
- Children, they have to work, no time to play- can play but pushing sticks in mud, scared being reaped for the hunger games, not a lot of choice for future jobs- most will be coal miners.

Sexxxy paragraph

In the 'Hunger Games', Setting is used effectively to show the theme 'Rich vs Poor' is more then just money it is about who has power privilege and opportunities. For instance, we can see the idea of privilege reflected in the physical environments of District 12 and the Capitol. n district 12 the buildings are broken down and not secure whereas the building in the capitol show modern design, variation in materials and are built on a grand scale. This makes the audience think about the differences in wealth and power between the two locations. District 12 has nothing whilst people in the Capitol are safe and secure in their advanced buildings. The purpose of this was to show that Katniss Everdeen has come from a place of less privilege and power so her success in the games is very unlikely. Coinciding with this is the use of colour. In District 12 are lots of browns and greens whilst in the Capitol we see a futuristic palette of metallic, greys, blacks and silvers. The use of settings and colour effectively show us the imbalance of privilege between those living in places like District 12 and the Capitol.

English

The Hunger Games: A Lesson on Global Poverty | The Borgen ProjectIn the hunger games there are 12 districts divided  1 being the richest 12 being the poorest  although in the real world we aren't divided by actual districts, we could use that as a metaphor in the real world because the rich and the poor are divided by the places the live or the things the do for a living. In Panem, wealth is heavily concentrated in the hands of the rich, particularly those people living in the Capitol and certain of the districts, and the result is a huge disparity between their lives and the lives of the poor.

trolley cart scenario

The Trolley Problem: A Thought Experiment That Tests Our Morality ...Is it better to harm many people in order to save one or is it better to harm one person in order to save many people? The trolley cart scenario is a very well known conundrum that different people have different perspectives and opinions on.
If you were in a trolley cart and the carts brakes suddenly wouldn't work and you were going at a very high speed would you if you were given the opportunity pull the lever and switch tracks and save one person but it would result in you harming many others or would you save many others and it would result in you harming one what would you do?

Many people say that they would sacrifice one person in order to save many others. If we were to change the conundrum slightly and say that there were 5 strangers and  a close friend would you still harm your close friend in order to save 5 people or would your opinion change depending who it was?

For example, think of yourself as a doctor. There are five people that need organ transplants, one needs a heart, one needs a liver, one needs a kidney, one needs a lung and the other needs a pancreas without the transplant they would die. You happen to have a very unwell patient in the next room that has a perfectly healthy heart, liver, kidney, lung and pancreas would you if you were given the opportunity would you sacrifice that one unwell patient in order to save the five that need the transplants or would you keep the one person alive and let the five that need the transplant die?

Unwind

3 Synonyms for Dystopia

- Hellish
- Pandemonium
- Anti utopia

Antonym for dystopia is Utopia (the perfect world)

Which dystopian novels have your read?
I have read the giver which is really a utopia but its so perfect that its actual bad.

How many dystopian novels can you name?
The giver, The hunger games, tomorrow when the war began.

What are some key elements that you notice when you read a dystopia?
Things  i find that dystopian novels have in common are they are usually based on some kind of war or battle or they include being killed at a young age, these are just based off of ones i have read.

Examining the cover.

How do you think the story will be written?
I think it would be written in a futuristic way.

Why do you think the story is entitled as it is?
I think that unwind is the key concept of the novel and will be to refereed to repetitively.

Where do you think the story will take place?
I think that the story will be set in the future and maybe in a small town with few people.

What time period do you think the story is written?
I think that this novel will be set far in the future.

Exploring the blurb:

What do you already know about pro life and pro choice groups? What do these terms mean? Is it an issue you have thought about?
I don't know anything about them. Pro-life mean opposing abortion and euthanasia and Pro-choice means understanding that abortion is a choice and letting the women chose whether or not she will get one.

What do you know about organ donation?
I don't know much but i know that you can chose to be one and put it on your drivers licence so if you die at the scene and they get to you soon enough and your organs are in good condition then they can donate them to someone that needs them.

Can you make a connection with the language used to describe this place, and other places people have been sent historically?
I know that o the past people have been killed and used for their organs but back then i dont know what it was called.

What religious connotation does the word harvest evoke?
That the people who believe god are most likely going to believin the harvest.

The term living in a divided state is  really a euphemism for what? Can you think of other common euphemisms? Why do people use euphemisms?
I think that the term living in a divided state is really a euphemism for they are actually dying. I think euphemisms are a way for letting people down softly.

What is the definition of legal?
Permitted by the law, it is something you are allowed to do according to the law.

What is the definition of ethical?
Knowing right from wrong and choosing the right choice in certain situations.

Do you believe that because something is legal it is also ethically or morally right?
No, because just because the law may say its the right thing to do doesn't mean that it is.

Can things that are ethically sound ever be illegal? Provide examples.
Yes, the government may not have thought of everything at the time.

Can you think of examples in history that support your ideas? Provide examples.
Euthanasia, its illegal but i believe that it is ethically right because it is considered a good death.

1. I think that people have just thought about it and made up their own version of what happens and then it goes around.

2. I feel that nurse Greta sentence has a stronger meaning and I personally think that her argument is stronger. To change the law before changing human nature is wrong because to change the law you must first change human nature.

3. Storking a baby gave her a second chance and she knew that she would've been weighing the child down if she had of kept it at least she dropped it off at a house in a nice neighborhood which showed that she kind of cared about the wellbeing of the child.

6. Yes, ill usually try to think about something funny or will think of the consequences sometimes it helps but sometimes it doesn't.

1. it tells us that he needs to survive so he's willing to do everything in his power to do so. We can tell that he has changed due to desperation.

2. Obviously if i had the choice i would want to live but when it comes to answering the question i wouldn't want to be either. With unwinding  your parents or a staho are signing you off which gives you the feeling of being unwanted, But i guess a positive of being unwound is your parts have a purpose and they could be given to someone that could do something great. Where as with being dead you just die like no one knows where you go and i just think that it's something i don't want to happen.

3. I think that technaaly your still alive because your body parts are still living but but you physically and emotionally as a person is dead because you don't exist anymore i guess.

The Hunter Swoop

Lifeless bushes covering a brown dry surface. I see mountains decorated with snow as white fluffy clouds hover above them. Burning rubber lingers in the air and tyre marks lie across the icy road. The road fades in the distance as painted stripes brighter than the sun follow it.

The chard trees shadow over me as i look into the distance. A blanket of yellow leaves lay across the muddy surface. A lagoon stands in front of me blocking me from Entering the burnt Forrest.

Unfortunately my teeth were covered with metal wires, At school I  get called brace face. As i looked in the mirror i notice that my scody teeth had popcorn in-between them. My teeth were more yellow than the sun.

Mirror Mirror

Mirror Mirror on the wall who is the baddest bitch of them all? "Not you, you look like road kill" "Wow thanks way to build a girls confidence!"
Image result for Vintage mirror

It all started a week ago when my brother bought me a vintage mirror off of eBay for my birthday. I absolutely loved it i loved the frame work but i it attitude ruins its beauty.

Attitude? how can a mirror have attitude you might say? My mirror is one of a kind it tells you how you look but instead of giving you complements it burns you hotter than the snags on the barbie.

Like this morning it told be i looked whiter than the ice in Antarctica and my blouse looked like i got it out of the trash whilst the bin was on fire! Rude right?

Inside a bag

Head spinning like a merry go round, Blood pouring out of my head faster than
a running stream. My air is limited and i don't even remember what happened.
I feel around me and I feel a cold metal zipper  as if I was in a bag. OH MY
GOD IM LOCKED INSIDE A BAG!!! I start to hyperventilate and soon enough
everything is black IM DEAD!

Journey to school

The Law had just been broken, Girls were now
allowed to have an education. I am Lulah. I am
13 and I still don't know how to read. I live in a
small village about an hour away from my new
school. To get there though is the hardest,
longest journey I have ever taken. It's all worth
it though.

To get to school we have to shuffle across the
rockiest mountains and swing on vines,
Balance on a thin beam across crocodile
infested waters and fight a bear every day
just to get to school.

I wish there was a school in our village but if we have to go on the hardest journey i would still do it.
