In English we are watching the movie Silver lining Playbook and choosing film aspects we think were paired effectively together and then writing a SEXXY paragraph about them. Below is my SEXXY paragraph and this is my first attempt at doing so, it may not be perfect but I tried my best.
In the first scene, the director uses handheld shot together effectively with music.
In the first scene we can see that they are using the handheld camera technique by the way the camera is shaky and unsteady. It gives a more raw approach to the scene and reflects the way Pat is thinking and feeling, If the camera were to be on a tripod where it is still and smooth we wouldn’t have the same effect because the hand held shot adds emotion into the scene and corresponded really well with the way music is used in the first scene as well. Music starts playing as the when we see the word “EXCELSIOR” in bold letters on the wall, this is Pats modo he uses it to remind himself of the greater good and to stay positive which the music reflects by starting to play a happy uplifting tune. Pat skips his meditation and the beat starts to pick up more whilst the camera is still using the handheld shot technique and following him through the steps of his routine. We can notice as he is in the group meeting that the music is still uplifting but the volume lowers as he is enlightening the group and supporting others while giving his words of wisdom. Pat is working out and the music continues to get more exhilarating but the music suddenly goes eerie and disinant when his mother shows up overshadowing and standing over him until it finally stops all together giving us a more cold and dissonant feeling.
Music adds emotion to the scene and the handheld camera shot technique allows you to see the emotion through the camera lens in the scene as well as giving it a more raw feeling. I think that the Director chose to use these two film aspects together in the first scene because he wanted to harness the emotion. For example when you hear the eerie dissonant music playing in the background you start to feel a bit nervous because you can tell that the music is reflecting the characters state of mind whereas if you hear more of an upbeat music tune you tend to feel more happy and can see that the character is also happy or excited.
The handheld camera shot technique and music are used effectively throughout the film and contrast each other nicely. This is because both film aspects create or let us see emotion which has a big part in films, without emotion in the characters you can't expect the audience to feel emotion which I think is very important.
I think that the handheld camera shot technique also works really well with the film aspect editing, we can see these two aspects being used together in the first scene as well as when it jumps from “EXCELSIOR” to him getting his medication then to him spitting it out, and then it jumps to the group meeting and so on. Editing also works really well with the music aspect because the quick jump from edit to edit build a sort of suspense which can then build emotion just like music, so using these two film aspects together like they did in the first scene was a real build up of emotion and suspense.
